CONCERN that criminals are piling up stocks of guns by targeting rural houses has prompted gardaí in County Tipperary to increase patrols in the countryside.

Superintendent Jim Fitzgerald said there was an increasing trend over the past year where criminals were targeting unoccupied houses throughout the county to steal shotguns and rifles.

The latest incident occurred last week in Toomevara when five guns were taken from a house.
