JUSTICE Minister Michael McDowell is to announce before the end of the week his proposals for recruiting 2,000 extra gardaí.

It is thought his plans include freeing up spaces at the Garda College in Templemore by moving short-term courses for existing members to other facilities.

The plan is to phase in the recruitment over three years. It is likely the proposals will also include increasing the number of civilians in administrative posts.
