MYSTERY surrounds the death of a 21-year-old man found in the bedroom of his home at Eyrecourt, Co Galway, by his mother on Monday.

Gardaí said yesterday that a post mortem examination on the body of John Rooney had failed to establish the cause of death and further tests are being carried out.

Gardaí are investigating whether there is any link between the young man’s death and his intervention in a row late on Sunday night.

Officers are trying to establish if Mr Rooney had been assaulted during the incident.

It is understood there were some slight marks on the dead man’s face.

One of four children of Padraic and Doreen Rooney, John worked in the family’s aluminium window business in Eyrecourt.

Gardaí cordoned part of the main street of the village yesterday as they continued their inquiries into the row which John tried to halt.

Locals have described John as a quiet, gentle young man who was very popular and played soccer on the local team.

Gardaí in Dublin are investigating the death of a young man whose body was taken from the Royal Canal near Croke Park at 9am yesterday.

The man, who is believed to be in his early 20s, has not yet been identified. Gardaí said they had yet to complete their investigation but at this early stage say they do not suspect foul play.

Meanwhile two men died in separate accidents yesterday when they lost control of their motorbikes on Monday night .

A 34-year-old man was killed on the Tullow Road at Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, at 10.15pm.

And a 19-year-old man died when his motorcycle struck a wall at Crickstown in Curragha, Co Meath, at midnight.

Shane White had been travelling from Cushionstown towards Ratoath when the accident occurred.

The dead man would have celebrated his 20th birthday today.
