The Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland met Education Minister Noel Dempsey to set out their position on the paid scheme which they have difficulty implementing. However, while talks are set to continue today, no breakthrough was reported by either side. At issue is the interpretation of a €1,400-a-year payment to teachers for supervision and substitution.

The ASTI rejects Department of Education and school management policy that teachers will only be paid for doing the work, but not for being available to do it.
