Four men held after 25-mile high-speed chase

The men, who are suspected of carrying out burglaries in North Cork, were spotted at around 2.40pm yesterday at a house on the southern side of Fermoy.

Two patrol cars tried to stop them at a roundabout near Corrin, but they rammed them and drove their getaway car, a Honda Civic, off at high speed.

Gardaí pursued them along the main Cork-Dublin road, through the village of Rathcormac and along the Watergrasshill and Glanmire bypasses.

Assistance was called for and a patrol car from Mayfield was the first to respond.

The Honda Civic stopped momentarily at the Dunkettle roundabout, where one of the four occupants got out and tried to make a run for it. However, he was quickly apprehended by Mayfield gardaí.

The Honda took off again at high speed through the Jack Lynch Tunnel and past the slip-road up to the Mahon Point shopping centre. It then did a handbrake turn and went up the down side of the slip road.

Gardaí said that at this stage a number of concerned motorists had contacted them about the Honda’s high speeds.By now a patrol car from Blackrock, one from Togher, another from Douglas and two from Anglesea Street had joined in the pursuit.

The Honda then sped down Skehard Road, past Blackrock Garda Station and turned into a housing estate in the hope of losing the pursuing gardaí.

However, the estate turned out to be a cul-de-sac and the men’s escape was sealed off by three patrol cars.

A garda spokesman said that the men put up “some resistance” before they were all arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The arrests took place 20 minutes after the high speed pursuit had started.

The men were described as being in the early to mid-20s and all had addresses in Cork City.

The garda spokesman said the men were well known to them.

Three of them were detained at the Bridewell garda station and the fourth was held in Mayfield.
