Vintage car revs up for return

A 100-YEAR-OLD car, which has been painstakingly restored to its original condition, will again be seen on the roads of Cork and Kerry this weekend.

Vintage car revs up for return

The labour of love has been undertaken by Denny Cronin, of Ballinora, Co Cork, over the past 21 years, believed to be the longest restoration period ever in this country.

Now, it’s all systems go for the Minervett, or Baby Minerva Type A, manufactured in Belgium by the Minerva motor company, in 1904. The car, purchased near Skibbereen, Co Cork, for £108, still has its first registration number, IF 131.

The red two-seater will be the main attraction at the 21st Olde Machinery Rally, in the grounds of the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, on Easter Sunday.

Mr Cronin, a mechanic by trade, had only the chassis, axles, springs, some woodwork and wheels, which were in poor condition, to work on when he got the Minerva into his garage. A search began for other items, including the engine/gearbox, bonnet, clutch and petrol tank. It was a quest that received the help of motor buffs as far away as Australia. Also of assistance was legendary road bowl player, Mick Barry, who respoked the wheels.

The little car is now reported to be in perfect motoring order and capable of 50 miles to the gallon.

To mark Mr Cronin’s achievement, he will be presented with a specially struck Minerva medal at the Killarney rally. “Denny’s car is only one of five in the world,” rally organiser Brendan Griffin said.

It promises to be a hectic weekend in Killarney, with several events taking place as part of the Killarney 250 celebrations.

St Paul’s basketball club is hosting a week-long programme, whilst 140 cyclists will compete in a criterium around the streets of the town on Sunday afternoon.
