CONSTRUCTION of a €132,000 children’s playground on a local authority housing estate in Waterford city has been halted over residents fears it would become a magnate for anti-social behaviour.

Despite securing funds from two different grant schemes, Waterford City Council was yesterday forced to cancel the project after it received objections from locals who say the playground would become the focus for young vandals and thugs.

“They’re drinking and smoking hash and whatever else up the road, so why give them something nice to destroy,” Laura Murphy-Jacob, of Ardmore Park in Ballybeg said.
