Dempsey bans tradition of half days

EDUCATION MINISTER Noel Dempsey has banned dignitaries such as lord mayors and bishops giving half days to school children.

Teaching unions have reacted angrily to the dictate and called on the minister to reverse his decision.

Mr Dempsey outlined his opposition to the decades-old tradition in a letter to Cork Lord Mayor Colm Burke.
