THE Government and Iarnród Éireann were last night heading towards an embarrassing public standoff over the controversial DART upgrade project.

According to Government sources, Transport Minister Seamus Brennan yesterday requested CIÉ chairman John Lynch to defer the weekend work on the site until after Christmas. He had earlier requested that work should be suspended for the three weekends leading up to Christmas.

But Iarnród Éireann spokesman Barry Kenny was adamant the only request Mr Lynch had received from the minister was in relation to the three weekends before Christmas.
