MOBILE phones could become the new eyes of the law if quick-thinking citizens use the latest in-built camera technology to photograph crimes as they happen.

Gardaí may use phone cameras to fight crime

The gardaí have said they will accept pictures taken with the newly launched camera phones as evidence in cases where passers-by or victims get a shot that is of value in identifying a suspect.

The value of any such picture would be assessed firstly by the DPP and ultimately its admissibility as evidence in any subsequent court case would be decided by the presiding judge.
