Road death rate worst in new EU members

POLAND, Latvia and Lithuania have the worst road accident death rates of any of the 26 countries in the European Union, new figures show.

The figures come as Transport Minister Martin Cullen this week launched road safety leaflets in foreign languages like Polish to slash the toll of non-nationals dying on Ireland's roads.

The figures show the death toll per million cars is the highest among the new EU member states from eastern Europe far outstripping those of Ireland, Britain and Germany.
