Youth facility closure attacked
Prison officers yesterday claimed Minister Michael McDowell will regret the decision to close Shanganagh Castle, a unit for 16 to 21 year-olds nearing the end of their sentences. The warning was made following a public protest from staff over their treatment before and after the closure.
Justice Department officials have argued it was simply not viable to keep the unit open as there were only a handful of youngsters being held on the site.
