Speed cameras to be used at 600 accident black spots

HALF of all motorists can expect to pass through a speed checkpoint at least once a month under Government proposals for a major expansion of the use of speed cameras later this year.

A combination of fixed and mobile cameras will be used at around 600 sites around the country which have been identified as accident black spots, a the National Roads Authority (NRA) conference heard.

Department of Justice official Brendan Callaghan said it was proposed to place a camera at each location for a period of up to three hours at least once a week.
