Labour’s Ryan to run in Euro elections

Mr Ryan, who is Labour group leader in the Senate, said European politics had always fascinated him.

“In Europe the strongest political voices are usually from the left, and usually they are on the side of progress. It’s high time voices from Munster were heard amongst these voices of progress, Tthat’s where I hope to be,” Senator Ryan said.

Meanwhile, the Green Party has announced that it is to run six women candidates in next June’s local elections in the W est Cork region.

The party announced that it aspired to take three town council and three county council seats.

A party spokesman said its candidates are Isabelle Sutton (Kinsale Town Council); Rosie Cargin (Bandon County Council area); Jennifer Sleeman (Clonakilty Town Council); Bernie Connolly (Skibbereen County Council area); Madelaine McKeever (Skibbereen Town Council) and Jacqi Hodgson (Bantry County Council area).

Isabelle Sutton and Rosie Cargin have been very active on the hazards to food and farming of the proposed incinerators in Ringaskiddy.

Jennifer Sleeman was chair of the committee which was successful in gaining the status for Clonakilty as the first Fair Trade Town. Bernie Connolly was active as a community worker in West Cork and is chairperson of Cork Environmental Forum.

Madelaine McKeever is a key figure in Growing Awareness and a strong supporter of farmers’ markets. Jacqi Hodgson, is a development worker with Cork Environmental Forum and is an active member in Ballydehob.
