THERE is no reason why half of people become depressed, a leading psychiatrist declared last night.

While psychiatrists have known for years that people suffering from depression might not have any associated risk factors, the public has not received that message.

“I don’t know why the message has not got across. Perhaps it is because people find it difficult to accept that they need medication rather than psychotherapy,” said Prof Patricia Casey.
