Café bars will worsen alcohol crisis, warn doctors

ALCOHOL-RELATED problems will escalate if the Government goes ahead with plans for new café-style bars, the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) warned yesterday.

With Justice Minister Michael McDowell eager to revamp Ireland’s 100-year-old licensing laws, the IMO warned the reforms could do more harm than good.

It claims the increased availability of alcohol will lead to more A&E admissions, suicide cases, fatal road traffic accidents and house fires.
