Fort plays host to ancient battles

THE sounds of muskets crackling and sabers clashing echoed around a historic fort as colourful groups engaged in military re-enactments as part of National Heritage Week.

Sometimes historical accuracy was consigned to the bin as English redcoats skirmished with Confederate soldiers from the American Civil War.

“It can make history a bit confusing, but it’s all good clean fun,” explained Paddy Bassett, a member of the Pards group which specialises in Confederate battle scenes.
