ONE of the country’s best known rivers for trout and salmon fishing has been polluted after the body charged with protecting it allowed sludge from a sewage treatment plant into its waters.

Kilkenny’s River Nore is an EU-designated salmon river. But ammonia and suspended solids found in the river have been traced back to the county council’s sewage treatment plant, a damning report shows.

The council has admitted the offence and says it is doing all it can to rectify it.
