Planning for shopping complex will create 500 jobs

The Clancy Construction Ltd development will be on the former 43-acre Glanbia site in the Shandon area of the town. However, the local authority has attached 44 conditions to allay the concerns of objectors who successfully appealed a previous planning permission decision of the town council to An Bord Pleanala. Among those objectors were RGDATA and An Taisce, and after a four-day oral hearing their objections were upheld.

In drafting the new application, the managing director of Clancy Construction, Billy Clancy, said they had made every possible effort to address the six key points under which Bord Pleanala ruled against them last time: “We believe we have succeeded in doing just that, and hopefully we can now proceed with a project that will generate hundreds of new jobs and will make Dungarvan one of the most attractive shopping meccas in the region.”

“The news that this latest application has been granted full planning permission by the town council is the best Christmas present Dungarvan could have got,” said Dungarvan mayor Nuala Ryan. Mayor Ryan said that in this season of goodwill she would make the most sincere appeal to the objectors not to challenge the latest planning permission: “It will be a tragedy if this project is lost to Dungarvan and the whole west Waterford region.”

The development will have Dunnes Stores as the anchor tenant in addition to several major shopping outlets. It will also have a four-screen cineplex, a nightclub, restaurants, and parking facilities for hundred of vehicles.
