A SHORTAGE of donor eggs in this country means up to 100 Irish couples with fertility problems are on waiting lists for eggs with many forced to travel to Spain or the United States.

Doctors working at Irish fertility clinics say the availability of donor eggs for fertility treatments has all but collapsed in Britain since a change in law last year made it possible for children born from donated sperm or eggs to trace their donor.

The UK used to be the main source of donor eggs for Irish couples who didn’t have a friend, relative or anonymous Irish donor.
