BONO has beaten competition from British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac to become Europe’s greatest hero.

The U2 lead singer, who is already laden down with similar honours, was picked by online voters from a list of 36 other Europeans compiled by the prestigious Time magazine.

His work for the starving started with Band Aid in 1984 but developed over the years into a crusade lobbying world leaders and trying to reduce Third World debt.
