MORE girls began college courses than boys in 2004, research for the Higher Education Authority (HEA) shows.

But although 54% of entrants were female, more boys entered institutes of technology, where they represented 53% of first-year students.

The biggest gender gap was in teacher training colleges, where girls outnumbered boys by more than six-to-one.
