Carpet plant layoffs deepen employment woes in town

IN a week when local politicians expressed concerns about what they described as an unemployment crisis in the town, Youghal was left reeling yesterday under the impact of another major jobs setback.

Twenty-seven of the 100-plus workforce at Couristan Carpets received redundancy notices, and it is understood that a further 27 will get them at the end of next week.

Couristan managing director Barry McCarthy was unavailable for comment.
