EU applicant states should be treated equally to current members, Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams said yesterday.

Calling for a No vote to the Nice Treaty referendum, Mr Adams said Sinn Féin wanted to see a partnership of equals and not a two-tier superstate that Nice would create.

"Over the last few weeks we have listened to a lot of scaremongering, bullying and negative campaigning but we have heard very little positive debate, very little discussion on issues central to the long term future of the EU," he said.
