Expo ‘debacle’ put to bed

HANOVER will always be remembered with fondness by Irish people as the venue for Ronnie Whelan’s remarkable volleyed goal against Russia in Euro 88.

The final chapter was written yesterday, though, in another memorable saga based in the German city spanning almost a decade, costing the taxpayer €8 million and caused by the desire to keep up appearances on the diplomatic stage.

The book was firmly closed yesterday on the intriguing tale of the Irish Pavilion at Expo 2000 at Hanover in Germany.
