Homes face waste bill hike under clean-up law

HOUSEHOLDERS face major hikes in bin charges under tough new laws aimed at making people pay for pollution.

Opposition parties claim the latest stealth tax will push the bill for waste collection to over 600 a year.

Defending the move yesterday, Environment Minister Martin Cullen said local authorities were not charging the full cost of waste disposal and managers would be given new powers to set bin charges.
