HOUSEHOLD electricity bills could rise substantially from January next if an ESB application for price increases proves successful.

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), the State body responsible for overseeing the sector, granted the ESB a 9% increase last autumn and a further 3.5% increase at the start of this year.

Taken together, these increases had the effect of pushing the average two-monthly household bill from €105 to €118.
