THE rural postal service is facing major disruption coming up to Christmas following the Irish Postmasters Union (IPU) rejection of a company offer yesterday.

Hopes of ending the three-month dispute between An Post and 540 rural postmasters over pay were dashed when the IPU said the company’s offer did not go far enough.

The postmasters want extra payments for supervising and providing their premises for mail sorting but An Post has insisted that they are not entitled to any extra pay because they are on contract.
