A 74-YEAR-OLD Episcopalian priest from America has become the first woman Church of Ireland vicar in Killarney.

The Rev Dr Margaret Hemphill, who lived for 50 years in Chicago, was ordained 20 years ago. Her 76-year-old husband James, a deacon, will assist with services when required.

“We’ve been here twice before and are really looking forward to spending time in Killarney and the beautiful St Mary’s Church. We’re receiving an extremely warm welcome,” she said.
