Ireland may join EU defence force

IRELAND is to consider taking part in a standing EU defence force that would be ready to take part in peacekeeping operations in the future.

This so-called structured cooperation on defence is one of the clauses in the draft constitution Ireland will be signing up to now that its neutrality is to be written into the document.

Foreign Minister Brian Cowen said he supported the broad thrust of the military and civilian structured cooperation plan.
