NEW Finance Minister Brian Cowen yesterday insisted his focus was not on sham politics aimed at grabbing votes but on generating the economic growth required to invest in social needs.

Speaking during his first day as Charlie McCreevy’s replacement, Mr Cowen branded the Opposition’s arguments “rather illiterate” and denied the Government had done little to improve social services.

In a message crafted towards selling Fianna Fáil’s new caring persona, Mr Cowen said his priority would be generating growth to continue investing in areas of need.
