ONE in every 14 people working in the construction industry in Europe sustains serious injuries every year, it emerged yesterday.

The largest-ever EU campaign to stem the huge human and financial costs of poor safety standards in the industry was launched in Dublin yesterday.

The latest statistics show fatal accidents claim, on average, 1,300 construction workers’ lives yearly, and the cost of accidents and work-related illnesses costs the EU €75 billion a year.
