McDowell slams ID card plans

THE Irish public will not be forced to have and carry identity cards even if this measure is introduced in Britain, Justice Minister Michael McDowell said yesterday.

It would give gardaí the right to stop anyone, force citizens to identify themselves and make them a criminal if they were not their carrying identification card, he added.

It would alter the relationship between the police and the public if such a law was introduced.
