The gardaí are trying to catch a young robber who has been targeting cars on one particular busy city roundabout.
He strikes when cars are stopped in traffic gridlock and usually targets women motorists.
Gardaí have issued a special alert to women motorists to keep their car doors locked when they are travelling alone.
The most recent incident at the Kilmallock Road roundabout involved a woman motorist who was stopped there in heavy traffic.
Crime prevention officer, Sgt Liam Sheehan, said: “This woman was driving her car towards the roundabout on the Kilmallock Road. She had to come to a halt due to the traffic. As she did so this youth opened the passenger door, grabbed her handbag from the passenger seat and ran off.”
The bag contained €400 in cash and a Sony digital camera.
Sgt Sheehan said there have been a number of similar attacks at this roundabout recently and the gardaí suspect the same person may have been involved in each of the robberies.
Sgt Sheehan said motorists, particularly women, should be on the alert for the thief when approaching the Kilmallock Road roundabout.
He said: “Do not provide an easy opportunity for this young opportunist thief. I would ask women drivers, especially, to lock all doors when travelling on their own. Put your handbag under the driver’s seat or in the boot. But the last place to have it is on the passenger seat.”
