Government strongly supports findings of commission report

THE Government yesterday gave its strong backing to the Independent Monitoring Commission report, saying it accepted its conclusions including the finding that figures at the highest level of Sinn Féin were also involved with the IRA.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, in his first public reaction to the report, also stood over his views that illegal and criminal activity by republicans was continuing in the Republic.

“I think that’s undoubtedly the case, I don’t think there’s even a debate about that,” he said.
