Man has facial surgery after assault

A YOUNG Limerick man underwent major facial surgery yesterday following a vicious assault earlier in the day.

The victim who's in his 20s was attacked by two youths as he walked on Sarsfield Bridge at around 4am.

Gardaí said the man was punched and kicked in the unprovoked attack as he lay on the ground.

A garda patrol car came on the scene and uniformed gardaí caught the two youths, both in their 20s after a chase. They were still being questioned last night.

Their victim underwent major facial surgery at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital yesterday afternoon for injuries, gardaí said were very serious.

One garda source said: "Had not the uniformed patrol come on the scene it would have been a very difficult assault to investigate as both the men arrested have not come under notice previous to this."
