Claims a compo-nent of May Day mayhem

THE Phoenix Park is one of the most dangerous places in the country — and that’s before the EU enlargement security cordon ever came along.

Famous for its roaming deer, reputed to be the largest urban enclosed municipal park within a city’s limits in Europe is also the origin of numerous compensation claims against the taxpayer.

After this weekend, a number of “peaceful protestors” may join the ranks of the compo claimants if all the hype is to live up to expectations.

The head of the Government’s compo claims agency Dr Michael Somers says claims have been nightmarish.

He also says the park is an embodiment of the problem.

Its 1,760 acres are a veritable magnet for claimants.

Stating that the Phoenix Park seems to be one of the most dangerous places around, Dr Somers cited accidents including:

Joggers tripping on potholes.

Walkers being impaled on railings.

Cyclists tumbling to the ground.

Parents tripping on undergrowth while chasing children.

“People just don’t seem to be responsible for their actions,” Mr Somers said.

All sorts of mayhem is being predicted for tomorrow in the park.

An unprecedented security operation will turn Farmleigh House into Fortress Farmleigh for the EU enlargement ceremony and the compo claims may rise again.

Unless everybody remains as peaceful as the deer.
