Irish Examiner wins international design awards

WE’VE done it again. The Irish Examiner has picked up another two prestigious awards for its front page design.

Irish Examiner wins international design awards

This is the second time this year that the newspaper's trademark front-page treatment of major stories has won it international honours for design.

This latest gong comes from the European Society for News Design for the newspaper's front page designs on the London bombings and on the IRA declaration that its leadership had "ordered an end to the armed campaign".

The winning pages will be exhibited in Trondheim, Norway on May 11-13.

Earlier this month, the Irish Examiner picked up two other awards of excellence from the American Society for News Design the Oscars of the industry

An award of excellence from the European Newspaper Awards will also be presented to Irish Examiner staff at a ceremony next month in Vienna, for front-page coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II.

Editor Tim Vaughan said the awards were a well-deserved recognition of the talent and creativity of his editorial colleagues.

"The mission of the Society of News Design is to enhance communication around the world through excellence in visual journalism, and I'm delighted they consider that we are doing the business in that regard," he said.

March has been a good month for this newspaper with Joint National Readership Survey (JNRS) figures showing that the Irish Examiner has the highest readership growth of any Irish newspaper daily, evening or Sunday.

From January to December last year the Irish Independent lost 37,000 (-6%) readers a day, while the Irish Times gained 13,000 (+4%). All the tabloids saw readership fall.

The Irish Examiner's figure of 260,000 daily readers, an increase of 18%, is confirmed by Audit Bureau of Circulation data released last week.
