GRIEVING relatives who don’t remove dead flowers or decaying wreaths from graveyards within two months of a burial, or who put up kerbing in designated lawned cemeteries, could face a fine of up €1,200 under bylaws being implemented in all cemeteries in Co Cork.

Cork County Council has adopted new by-laws aimed at making new cemeteries easier to maintain and those breaching the law could find themselves before a district court.

Under the legislation, the planting of shrubs and flowers in the newer varieties of lawned cemeteries will not be permitted.
