FF probe over fake letter

FIANNA FÁIL are to investigate a letter bearing the fake signature of the Taoiseach that was supporting the re-election of a candidate in the local elections.

The letter, which was last week circulated to as many as 2,000 voters in the Gorey area of Wexford, featured a colour picture of Mr Ahern with his signature. The letter urged voters to support local candidate Lorcan Allen of “Fianna Fáil.

The electorate was urged in the letter to give their support to Mr Allen over his running mate, Pat Rath. Mr Allen was elected to Wexford County Council at the weekend. Mr Rath did not get a seat.

Yesterday, Mr Allen said: “I heard about this letter at the count, but I haven’t seen it. I don’t know of anyone involved in my campaign either who would send out such a letter.”

A FF spokesperson said the letter had not come from the party.
