Work to begin on €2.5m breakwater

WORK is expected to begin later this year on a €2.5m breakwater at Valentia Island, following a nine-month delay for investigations into possible effects the development might have on a rare marine creature.

Kerry County Council confirmed, yesterday, that work can proceed without damaging the habitat of the white and maroon worm-life creature, scientifically known as edwardsia delapiae.

Senior executive transportation engineer Eamon Scanlan said the council had satisfied the National Parks and Wildlife Service that the creature’s habitat will be safeguarded.
