MORE THAN 1,000 extra primary teachers are needed to cater for the needs of children with learning disabilities, according the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO).

The body has called on Education Minister Noel Dempsey to make the funding available to tackle the shortage.

INTO general secretary John Carr said there was a crisis in special education which was largely caused by a lack of teaching staff.
