Biker 102nd person to die on roads this year

A 29-YEAR-OLD man became the 102nd person to be killed on the roads this year when his motorcycle was involved in a crash with a lorry.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the accident that happened at 3.10pm yesterday on the main Cork-Dublin road.

The collision occurred a mile north of the village of Kilbehenny, in north county Cork.

The injured man was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, but died a short while later.

A garda spokesman said they would not be releasing the dead man’s name until his relatives had been notified. It is understood he came from the Kilkenny area. Anybody with information about the accident is asked to contact Mitchelstown gardaí at (025) 84833.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old student has been moved from intensive care following a hit-and-run accident in the US.

Fergal Brady, from Co Cavan, had showed good improvement in recent days following the incident in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr Brady, a third-year business student, was on an exchange from Dublin City University when he and another student were hit on March 28.

Meanwhile, gardaí have warned motorists who have hit the highways this holiday weekend to adhere to the speed limit and not to drink and drive.

There was heavy traffic yesterday, especially out of cities, as people headed for the countryside.

Airports reported a busy time with an increased number of passengers leaving the country for sun holidays.

Ferries were running at full capacity and bus and train services were reporting very good business.

Travellers intending to use the DART services in Dublin over the weekend have been told to expect disruption because of ongoing works to upgrade the line.

DART services will only operate between Malahide and Connolly Station, while services south of Connolly Station will be suspended until Tuesday due to the engineering work being done on the line.

Alternative bus services will be provided for mainline rail passengers on the Connolly service to Gorey or Rosslare in Wexford to take them from Dublin to Greystones or Arklow in Co Wicklow.
