Play it again Sam as star vows to shine again

SEVERAL years ago, the world seemed to lie at Samantha Mumba’s feet - she had just starred in a Hollywood blockbuster, Time Machine, and was being tipped as the next Britney Spears.

Yesterday, another red carpet awaited the singer. But this time in Cork city. Outside Roches Stores.

Mumba - who was opening the Newbridge Emporium in Roches Stores - still seems to hold the public’s interest as a big crowd was soon spilling off the wide pavement outside the store.

In true celebrity style, Samantha arrived 20 minutes late. She was worth the wait. Wearing a pinstripe skirt and a black top, Samantha flashed her famous smile. She cut the ribbon to the Newbridge Emporium and then all hell broke loose as the autograph hunting began.

She’s still appealing, no doubt. But it was time to ask what exactly had gone wrong with her career and why she seems to have dropped out of sight.

“No, I’ve not gone anywhere,” Ms Mumba replied with an indignant smile. “I’ve just being doing my album and I’ve got a film coming out on December 23 called Boy Eats Girl and I’ve another film which I start shooting early June and that’s called Johnny Was.”

When asked who else was in the film Boy Eats Girl, she replied: “You’ll see soon enough because it’s not out till September. But it’s directed by Irish director Stephen Bradley and he did a great job.”

Boy Eats Girl is an Irish flesh-eating zombie film while Samantha plays a drug addict in Johnny Was which also stars former footballer turned movie star Vinnie Jones.

When asked what her album is called, she replied: “Well, I haven’t given it a title yet. Yeah, I’ve got a few guests featuring.”

However, she chose to remain coy about the identity of her guests: “No, I’m not saying who they are yet. Absolutely not.”

She did reveal that she had just flown in from LA, which left everyone marvelling at her stamina and ‘down to earth demeanour’ as she cheerfully resumed scrawling autographs and beaming for phone pics.

Don’t write her off yet. Perhaps we’ll soon be calling her the Comeback Kid.
