State under fire from EU for pollution failures

The judgment is the latest in a series of cases being taken by the European Commission against the Government over its poor implementation and enforcement of EU environment laws.

In the latest action, the commission claims the Government failed to take necessary measures to apply a directive on pollution caused by dangerous substances discharged into the water supply from agricultural sources.
