THE Teachers’ Union of Ireland is set to oppose any element of the next round of benchmarking that attempts to link pay rises to longer working hours.

The TUI, which represents more than 13,000 teachers at both second level and third level, yesterday warned the Government that it will resist any proposals designed to extend existing working hours.

Several motions were passed by delegates which instructed the union’s executive to ensure no changes to working conditions formed any part of any future benchmarking award.
