Newspaper recalled over photo of private parts

COPIES of a weekly newspaper were withdrawn from shops throughout Co Kerry yesterday after it was found it had inadvertently published a photograph showing the private parts of a leading Kerry footballer.

The tabloid Kerry’s Eye carried the colour photograph of All-Star and All-Ireland medal winner Marc O Sé, a teacher, in its sports section.

He was playing with An Gaeltacht in a county championship match against Dr Crokes of Killarney in Tralee.

The quarter-page picture shows O Sé, one of three brothers who play with Kerry and a nephew of former star Paidí O Sé, moving in to tackle another Kerry player, Colm Cooper of Dr Crokes.

The words “Crokes eye the big prize” are printed on the photograph, which covers over a quarter of a page.

The paper, printed in Tralee, has a circulation of 24,600 according to the Administration and Yearbook directory.

A well-known press photographer last night said that the private parts of GAA players often become inadvertently exposed during games and many did not have underwear inside their togs to cover their private parts.

“The togs have only a thin netting inside them and I think the GAA should urge its players to put on proper underwear,’’ he said.

The O Sé photograph was taken during the Kerry county football championship quarter-final, in Tralee, last Sunday. Dr Crokes won 2-11 to 1-9.

It is believed the paper was out for some hours before the error was spotted and newsagents were ordered to take copies off the shelves immediately.
