More than one intruder may have stabbed man in bedroom

The 28-year-old was killed by an intruder who got into his bedroom through an open window.

Gardaí have not ruled out the possibility that more than one killer may have got into the man’s home in Cork city in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

The body of Patrick Walsh was discovered by his brother, Thomas, at 5am at the family home at 62 Fair Hill Drive. He and his mother, Nellie, had heard a noise and when Thomas went to Patrick’s room to investigate he found the door locked.

He was subsequently able to get into the bedroom through the window and raised the alarm.

Gardaí continued to search the area for the murder weapon yesterday and carried out house-to-house enquiries.

Senior gardaí declined to comment on reports that Mr Walsh may also have been stabbed in the face and head.

“It is an horrific crime to have a young man murdered in his home,” Superintendent Mick O’Loughlin said.

He said the deceased had never been in trouble with the gardaí.

Neighbours said the unemployed father-of-one was a nice man who mainly kept to himself.

Up to 40 gardaí are now involved in the murder inquiry and have set up a special incident room at Gurranabraher Garda Station.

They launched the investigation after a post mortem was carried out on the body at Cork University Hospital by pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

No motive for the attack has yet been established by gardaí, who have appealed for the public’s help.

“We want to talk to anyone who was in either Fair Hill, John’s Well, Bridevalley, Parklands, or Onslow areas of Cork City between 12 midnight and 7am last Thursday,” Supt O’Loughlin said.

Gardaí in Gurranabraher can be contacted at (021) 4946209 or (021) 4395540.
