Emergency services remained on alert throughout the night with gales and heavy rain expected to wreak havoc across many parts of the country.

People were advised to stay indoors with the threat of structural damage to buildings and predicted floods as the powerful Atlantic storm battered the west coast from Counties Kerry to Donegal.
