FOUR companies accused of sending unsolicited text messages face prosecution later this year as data protection officials report a large increase in the number of complaints.

The number of new complaints received by the Data Protection Commissioner has topped 300 so far this year, compared to 258 for 2003.

It is expected the number will easily reach 400 by the end of the year.
